All the Beauty and the Bloodshed (2022) – engl. OmU

Winner of the Golden Lion for Best Film at the Venice Film Festival!

With her relentlessly direct images of sex, drugs and violence, New York photographer Nan Goldin became a star in the art world. In 2014, she experienced a profound break in her life when her doctor prescribed her the painkiller Oxycontin after an operation – Goldin was addicted to the opioid for three years. Having recovered from her addiction, she takes up the fight against the pharmaceutical dynasty that distributes Oxycontin. A brilliant collage of slideshows, intimate interviews and stunning photographic art documents Goldin’s life and her campaign. The result is at once a heartbreaking family story, the inspiring biography of an artist and the fascinating portrait of a brave activist.

Ray & Liz (2019) – engl.
OmU

“Pissed again? You drunken fucking bastard! Go on. Up on your feet, if you can. You’re gonna kill yourself if you keep this up, you know that, don’t you Ray? It’s half nine in the morning and you’re fucking pissed already!” – LIZ

“It’s your fault I’m like this. Drinking to excess. I never used to do it.” – RAY

Renowned photographer Richard Billingham makes his feature-film debut with this intricate family portrait, inspired by his own memories of growing up in the West Midlands in the late 70s and early 80s, and then his father and mother in the late 90s. Billingham revisits the figures of his earlier photographs — his alcoholic father Ray; his mother Liz; and his younger brother Jason — with a series of family vignettes where life, lived on the margins of society and societal taboos, can spiral out of control.

Afire (2023) – dt. OV

Summer on the Baltic Sea. It’s hot, dry, and hasn’t rained for weeks. Four young people meet in a remote holiday home nestled between the forest and the sea: Leon and Felix, childhood friends, Nadja, a seasonal worker in the coastal village, and Devid, a lifeguard.

“Petzold presents us with what looks like a very good comedy, funny, witty, precise, completely unaffected. Until the film, ignited by forest fires, takes on darker, denser colors…” EL MUNDO

La Chimera (2023) – ital. OmU

In 1980s rural Italy, plundering ancient Etruscan tombs is as lucrative as it is forbidden. As a diviner, the strange Briton Arthur (Josh O’Connor) is the trump card of a ragtag group of “tombaroli”, who dig up the Etrurian earth in search of ancient treasures: grave goods of immeasurable value, made for the souls of the deceased, not for the eyes of men. But Arthur is not chasing the chimera of easy money. His chimera looks like the woman he lost, Beniamina.

“La Chimera” is a miracle in the best tradition of Italian cinema: magical, deep, burlesque, down-to-earth and fantastical, philosophical, comedic and dramatic, a moving love story and an impetuous adventure.

IT 2023, Alice Rohwacher, 130 min., FSK from 12

Down by Law (1986) – engl. OmU

A flawless black and white gem from indie icon Jim Jarmusch. John Lurie, Tom Waits and Roberto Benigni play Jack, Zack and Roberto, who end up in a prison cell together and escape to freedom. Quirky dialogue, wonderful actors, unmistakable images by Robby Müller and a Tom Waits soundtrack to make you go weak in the knees – if you haven’t seen the film yet: now is the time! And those who already have will want to see it again and again…
