It was awe-inspiring to witness how the musicians delivered their challenging solos with such ease and precision. Each solo was a musical highlight in its own right, but the double bass passage, interpreted in the spirit of Charles Mingus, left a particularly lasting impression. The intensity and passion with which this part was played captivated the audience, making the evening an unforgettable experience.
Overall, the Mingus Project delivered a magnificent concert, distinguished by the impressive performance of the musicians and the special atmosphere of the venue. An evening full of musical highlights that will remain in the memory of the audience for a long time. With this event, Gut Bennigsen once again proved that it is the perfect place for extraordinary cultural events.
The Mingus Project is a tribute to the legendary jazz bassist and composer Charles Mingus. Under the direction of Jorik Bergman, the band has set itself the goal of bringing Mingus’ demanding and emotionally charged compositions to the stage.
“The Black Saint and the Sinner Lady” is a groundbreaking work by Mingus that was published in 1963. This suite is known for its complex structure and its profound, emotional themes. Performing this suite requires not only technical skill, but also a deep understanding of the emotional and cultural contexts in which Mingus worked. In addition to the suite, the Mingus Project has also included new arrangements of other pieces by Mingus in its repertoire.
These new arrangements offer a fresh perspective on Mingus’ works and showcase the versatility and creativity of the band under Bergman’s leadership. They presented their debut program at the 11th edition of the Weekend Festival in Cologne, a renowned festival known for its diverse and top-class music performances. The festival offered an ideal platform to present the complex and captivating repertoire of the Mingus Project to a wide audience.
