The ice cellar in the Bennigsen estate park

The historic ice cellar is located on a lake in the extensive park of Gut Bennigsen. It is embedded in a rampart, which creates a view point in the upper area. The view point is accessible via curved steps on both sides. Below it is the entrance to the basement itself.

The natural stone facade is divided by pilasters and blind arches. In the central axis lies the entrance with pillar and arch, whose keystone shows the year 1860. The building was probably erected by Rudolf von Bennigsen (1824-1902) in 1859 in the course of larger redesign measures in the park.

The actual purpose was the storage and preservation of natural ice. The vaulted interior but also the associated staircases above are in poor condition. As of today, the building is a listed monument and will be extensively renovated in the coming years. The planned construction aims to secure and repair the ice cellar and restore its original appearance.

Guided tours:

Meeting point is the main gate (Am Gut 6 in Bennigsen). The tour goes through the farmyard, via the park to the ice cellar and back.
