NIGHT CANDLES
What can classical music do today? The Orchestra in the Staircase has been working on an expanded concert concept for several years. With a playful exploratory drive, it explores the boundaries of the live concert situation, opening doors to new listening experiences, intimate moments and surprising content. Concert as an experience. Classical music as performance. Always with surprising connections to our reality.
The 20-member ensemble, which has won numerous awards, has become one of the leading representatives of the innovative classical music scene in Germany and Europe in recent years. With its format developments such as DARK ROOM, DARK RIDE, HYGGE, Dating Concert, Emergency Concerts, DISCO or the Corona production CIRCLES, it conducts research, often together with video artists, directors, actors and composers, and is regularly invited to national and international venues and festivals, such as the Podium Festival Esslingen, Beethovenfest Bonn, Elbphilharmonie Hamburg, Heidelberger Frühling, Klang trifft Kulisse Grafenegg, Bodensee-Festival, Mozartfest Würzburg, Musikfest Bremen, Classical:Next Rotterdam, Festival Theaterformen, Bayerischer Rundfunk Munich, Detect Festival and to the Fusion Festival.
Since 2020, the orchestra has also organized the month-long festival SEA SOUNDS on the North Sea island of Norderney every year, and in October 2022 the first edition of the KLANGBLASEN:FESTIVAL will additionally start in Hanover. Its STEP UP division concentrates the ensemble’s educational developments under its own roof; with workshops, coaching, developments for special target groups and many other impulses, it is strongly committed to social and cultural policy.
“The Orchestra in the Staircase succeeds in breaking new, contemporary ground in all aspects of concert operations” (Jury statement Perspektivpreis des Deutschen Theaterpreises DER FAUST 2021).
